Application advantages of AK06 for HPS

Application advantages of AK06 for HPS

In today’s market, the requirements of horizontal pumping systems (HPS) include:

  • minimum installation time;
  • minimum set-up time;
  • minimum downtime;
  • environmental friendliness;
  • operation durability;
  • integration with SCADA control and monitoring systems.Figure 1 – Example of a horizontal pumping system
  • An essential part of the HPS is a frequency drive, which provides:- durability of the unit operation;
    - equipment protection in the case of accidents;
    - energy cost savings;
    - compliance with IEEE 519 standards;
    - adaptation to the customer’s SCADA system;
    - downtime minimization for maintenance and repair;
    - easy in operation;
    - footprint minimization for equipment installation.
    Triol Corporation has vast experience in the oil production industry. Triol meets the high requirements for surface and submersible equipment and exceeds the HPS efficiency maximization in operation by using the variable speed drive Triol AK06.

Triol Corporation offers solutions

A component of any HPS is the motor. Usually, the VSD is located close to the motor, and there is no need for a long line. It is common to configure a VSD without using an output filter, which minimizes the voltage drop at the VSD output and allows the motor input terminals to have the rated voltage or voltage within the motor tolerance. However, not using a filter, specifically a sine-wave filter, leads to non-sinusoidal voltage, increased heating of the motor windings, and reduced motor life. Old and overhauled motors are susceptible to these influences.

Triol Corporation offers VSD with a built-in sine-wave filter for operation as the HPS part under the condition of motor operation in the soft mode when the motor is not fully loaded. Application of the sine-wave filter provides THDu ≤ 5% and thus reduces heating of the motor windings, insulation aging, and under conditions when the motor is not loaded, the mechanical wear of friction pairs is reduced. In sum, these advantages increase motor and equipment durability and reliability.

Since the volume of the pumped gas-liquid mixture can be up to 70,000 bpd, stopping the equipment for repair may lead to significant financial losses. HPS systems are equipped with sensors and warning systems to protect the equipment.

Triol VSD allows the use of a wide range of inputs/outputs to handle external signals, which is achieved by installing expansion units that have up to 20 digital inputs (Din) and up to 10 digital outputs (Dout), or up to 22 analog inputs (Ain) and 8 analog outputs (8 Aout), depending on the expansion unit configuration.

It is also possible to quickly replace the unit when, for example, you switch to another type of sensor.

Figure 4 - Expansion module connection compartment

The software allows complete external sensor configuration, from setting a unique sensor name for the maintenance staff’s convenience to setting the system operating limits based on the data received from the sensors.

VSD allows automatic adjustments of the optimum voltage. The benchmark for the optimal voltage is the minimum operating motor current. The optimum voltage automatic selection allows one to select the motor voltage depending on the operating conditions of the motor. Automatic selection is performed in cyclic mode within a preset interval after setting the operating frequency and/or after changing the motor rotation speed. This mode saves up to 10% of the power consumed by the entire application.

Triol Corporation has solutions with a built-in passive filter in the CP and LH lines. These lines allow the input THDi deviation to be kept to less than 5% at 25% to 100% load. The difference between the lines is the degree of enclosure protection - NEMA4/4X for the CP line and NEMA3R for the LH line.

An integral part of the operation of modern systems is the remote technological process control, which allows one to reduce operating costs of the equipment. Triol Corporation has excellent experience connecting its frequency drives to the customer’s SCADA system.

Figure 7 - The automated technological process control panel

VSDs are provided with the possibility of connection to SCADA system using communication interfaces RS232 and RS485. The software supports data exchange via Modbus communication protocol in the user’s SCADA system. What is important is that it is also possible to add data to the parameters of the frequency drive but also to connect external sensors and systems to the SCADA system.

The UMKA07 HMI controller allows one to configure the control in the shortest time due to the multi-level display of the submenus.

Figure 9 - UMKA07 Menu Example

The module design allows one to minimize the repair time of the VSD. Every module can be replaced in less than 30 minutes.

Based on our experience on offshore platforms, Triol has optimized the VSD design of compartments and units to achieve the smallest possible VSD footprint, allowing you to reduce your logistics losses and the space required to install your equipment.
